Actors Anonymous 17 June

Writing this in January 2013 so scratching about in the depths of my shaky memory.  This match was notable for Parliament Hill succumbing to my haranguing them on the telephone to make play possible in this dreadful wet Summer.  We got to the pitch and it was certainly a bit spongy.  Jamie for the Actors took the sensible decision on winning the toss as the weather was by now fine and inserted the Gardeners.

Very slow progress as David Stead and Chris Packham negotiated deliveries that were frequently skidding with the occasional lifter.  Chris was first to perish on reaching for a ball wide of off stump and was caught off the bottom edge for 5.  Enter Adam who’s enjoying a good start to the season and after also struggling against the low and slow pitch started to hit the ball around the park.  Dave was suitably emboldened and went after a wide one – caught at Point for 12.  Dave H came in and together with Adam we were starting to gain the initiative though the run-rate stayed very low owing to the damp outfield as well as the wicket.  Adam was then skittled for 21 and Dave soon after caught for 13.  Time for the middle order to impress … sadly not quite.  Jim M was bowled by a shooter.  Nick stayed at the crease while Stuart and Richard failed dismally.  Ben looked pretty good then went for a non-existent run.  Nick was then caught.  Paul looked good and remained not out on 6; Lord Fakenham at the unaccustomed number 11 (the game was already 10 overs old when he arrived) holed out.

So can we mount an heroic fightback?  Oh yes we can.  Paul got his magic inswingers working, inducing a return catch in the first over.  In his third over Ben took a good catch to have the Actors 2 down for 8.  In the meantime Ben at the other end always looked likely to get a wicket but nothing was going to hand.  Richard Hayles had dropped anchor for the Actors to steady them; only one remedy for this – Jim Monahan.  Our golden twirler found a delightful off-break to get through Richard’s stout defence and at 20-3 we were right in the game.  The Actors started to play very well against Jim’s excellent bowling and Lord Fakenham’s miserly 3-over spell, taking runs where they could.  The biggest scorer was Extras – I’m struggling to remember how so many were racked up, only 7 could have come from Byes and Leg Byes.  Must have been a bit stingy on Wides.  Jim got one past Hurst at last to take our fifth wicket with the score nearing 60.  Back in the game?  Oh yes as Dave Stead had worked out a trap for Richards’ propensity to lift the ball into the off side, Hollingsworth (who was very much part of the plan) taking the catch.  Flood frustratingly nurdled a few whilst Stuart made short work of Voss (caught-and-bowled) and Finnegan (bowled) until he closed the Flood gates (so to speak) with an LBW.  8 wickets down.  Come On Salmagundi!  Chris bowled beautifully the ball beating the bat on frequent occasions.  Dave and Stuart were miserly in pursuit of victory.  But canny Actors skipper Jamie scored an invaluable unbeaten 12 whilst Keane stoutly defended to deny us a famous victory.  A great game.
