Woodstock 30 May

Our first evening game of the season and at last a break in the weather – a lovely evening at Parliament Hill saw Woodstock skipper Bob win the toss and put us in to bat.  Richard open with Lord Fakenham and both looked very good, taking some sharp singles and then trading boundaries until Richard had a lofted drive intercepted and was out for 17.  The baronet kep going and retired on 25.  Jeff , David H and Bobby added 7 between them as Woodstock staged a dramatic comeback.  Nick played a captain’s innings of 22 as the remaining Gardeners came and went until our final three put bat to ball, Stewart Hyde and Stuart Bruce getting 8 each and then the late-arriving Dave Stead playing a 2 ball innings of 10 (one 4, one 6).  Not a bad total but we’ll have to field well.

Into the field and Paul bowled a mercurial first over, taking a wicket with his second ball and then having Kevin and Bob take a four each off him.  Mick started from the other end and Kevin edged one for four and then yorked Kevin.  Paul found an excellent line and length and contained the batting well.  In the meantime Woodstock were chancing their arms against Mick with the result that runs were coming fast – but so did two more wickets, most importantly the Woodstock talisman Bob for 24.  The Whitley Bay Champion joined the fray and got a few knocked off him before he bowled the dangerous looking Darren for 14.  It was now advantage Gardeners and our remaining bowlers Stuart and Fakenham turned the screw as Dave took another couple of wickets and the baronet found a lovely delivery to end the match.
