Superb bowling by Spike and Joe early on restricted the run rate of the attacking Actors openers; after a good opening stand, Spike trapped Navdeep lbw and then had Shashank caught at wide mid-on by Tim. And then brought in a sharp inswinger to castle Ali for a duck. Hurst and Javed rebuilt Actors innings as Stuart and Jeremy went close several times until Hurst pulled a short ball from Jeremy pretty hard, but Jason stood up to the challenge at square leg, taking a neat catch. Then Stuart bowled Javed for 15. Toby’s recovering well from his knee injury and claimed a couple of wickets with good bowling, then Jim mopped up the tail – featuring a stunning point-blank catch by Spike at silly mid-off to remove Bob Forsyth. A moment of resistance worth highlighting was Actors stalwart Richard Hayles hitting Jim back over his head (not too often our Praying Mantis gets that treatment off someone older than he is).
So just over a hundred to get; what followed was a sorry tale. Sam slogged all round a straight one for 1. Richard missed a full toss and was lbw – also 1. Tim got a good ball from Patodi, 0. Jason missed his first ball. Matt got a shooter (1). Jim ran himself out (1). Amidst all this, Toby batted beautifully but the outfield stopped many excellent drives from reaching the boundary. Joe played very well and for a while a comeback was on. Then they both got out to the impressive Shashank (outrageous figures of 5-1 in 5 overs) and we had too much to do, though Spike played intelligently to get 7, Jeremy was Shashank’s final victim, so there was no redemption for us (with apologies).
